Paris Grand Express Metro Project
The Grand Paris Express project began in 2010 and was designed and built by the developer Société du Grand Paris. It is estimated to take twenty years to complete, with the majority of the work taking place underground. This new transportation system, which could contain up to 200 kilometres of automated lines, will feature 68 new stations and as many districts: four metro lines will be extended (4, 11, 12, and 14) and four new lines will be built as part of the Grand Paris Express construction (15, 16, 17 and 18).
The Grand Paris Express will connect important business hubs (airports, corporate centres, research and university locations) and difficult-to-reach metropolitan areas.
End of the structural work of the extension of line 11 in Seine-Saint-Denis
The structural work required to extend line 11, between Les Lilas and Rosny-sous-Bois, has finally been completed.
After 15 months of progress under the Seine-Saint-Denis, the Sofia tunnel boring machine has finished its run at the foot of the future Serge Gainsbourg station, in Les Lilas. This step marks the end of structural work on the extension of line 11, which will link the current terminus, Marie des Lilas, to Rosny-Bois Perrier by 2023.
Redevelopment and modernization of the 13 existing stations of line 11 are also underway. The platforms will be adapted to improvethe running of the future metro. The commissioning of this new portion of the metro is scheduled for 2023 and will be accompanied by new, more spacious trains.
Six new metro stops will cover the route, which has been extended by six kilometres, to accommodate more than 15,000 daily travellers. Led by RATP, owner and operator of line 11, and Ile-de-France Mobilités, the project estimated at 1.3 billion euros is finally seeing the end of the tunnel, when negotiations began there 20 years ago.
Next steps
The Sofia tunnel boring machine, a 1,450-tonne structure, will be dismantled piece by piece in the basement to allow it to be extracted at the surface. The operation should end of the year to make way for the development of the stations, the tunnel as well as the laying of the rails, scheduled for 2022.
The fourth and final design-build contract concerns the section between Saint-Ouen and Bobigny, on line 15 East of the Grand Paris Express. The consultation will last approximately two years. Société du Grand Paris (SGP) announced the launch, on September 16, 2021, of the consultation for the second design-construction contract for line 15 East.
It includes the construction of 6 kilometres of tunnel between Saint-Ouen and Bobigny, in Seine-Saint-Denis, as well as the creation of four stations: Stade de France, Mairie d’Aubervilliers, Fort d’Aubervilliers and Drancy-Bobigny.
